What is a Free Look Period?

Once you have purchased your travel insurance policy, you will receive an email confirmation of your coverage from your travel insurance provider. Your policy confirmation email serves as your receipt and confirmation of coverage. These documents contain all the important details you may need on your trip including your policy number, details of your policy, Emergency Assistance, customer service, and claims contact numbers.

Most policies come with a Free Look Period which is typically 10 or 14 days following the day you purchase the policy. This allows you to cancel your policy for any reason and get a refund of your premium as long as it is canceled within this time frame.

Alternatively, please note, if your trip must be cancelled due to one of your policy’s covered reasons, you can file a Trip Cancellation claim to be reimbursed for your insured trip costs.

  • The Free Look Period is typically a 10-14 day period following the day you purchase the policy. However, after this date, your premium is fully earned, which means a refund is not allowed.

  • No policy can be cancelled and refunded once you have departed on your trip.

  • If you cancel during the Free Look Period, you will be refunded 100% of your premium.

  • Some policies will only issue a refund for a reduction of your trip cost during this free look period. After the free look period, the preimum is fully earned for the original insured trip cost.

  • If you are outside of the Free Look Period, cancelling your policy will be considered by the insurance provider on a case-by-case basis. Some providers may provide a pro-rated refund of your premium, or a credit to use your policy for a future trip, however, this is not guaranteed.

This information can vary based on the travel insurance policy. Please review the policy certificate to verify coverage. If you have questions about a specific policy, please contact us directly at 800-576-2674.
