Unlocking Peace of Mind: The Importance of Cancel for Any Reason Travel Insurance

What is Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance?

Cancel For Any Reason, commonly referred to as CFAR, is an optional travel insurance upgrade that offers increased flexibility to travel plans. With this upgrade, travelers can receive partial reimbursement for prepaid and non-refundable trip payments if a trip is canceled for a reason not otherwise covered by a policy.

Cancel For Any Reason is a time-sensitive upgrade. Most policies with Cancel For Any Reason coverage can only be purchased within 10–21 days of the first payment toward the trip. This varies by policy

To be covered under the Cancel For Any Reason benefit, a traveler must cancel their trip in its entirety at least 2-3 days before their scheduled departure date. Depending on the policy, this benefit reimburses 50% or 75% of the trip cost, and requires the traveler to insure 100% of their prepaid and non-refundable trip costs.

Cancel For Any Reason provides the most possible flexibility for travelers who are concerned about a cancellation. Many travelers turn to Cancel For Any Reason coverage when a typical Trip Cancellation policy won’t cover their cancellation concerns.

What are the eligibility requirements and limitations for Cancel For Any Reason?

Cancel For Any Reason has specific parameters that need to be met for a person to qualify for this coverage, including the following:

  • Travelers must insure 100% of their prepaid and non-refundable trip costs. This includes all travel-related trip expenses such as flights, hotels, rental cars, or tours among others.

  • Travelers must purchase a policy with Cancel For Any Reason coverage within 10-21 days of making the initial trip deposit to qualify. This varies by policy.

  • Travelers must cancel their trip in its entirety 2-3 days before their departure to receive reimbursement.

It’s important to keep in mind that CFAR is only available before a traveler leaves for their trip.

How much does Cancel For Any Reason cost?

Because of the added flexibility of this upgrade, Cancel For Any Reason generally adds 40-50% to the insurance premium when adding this to a normal Trip Cancellation policy. Due to this increase in cost, we recommend Cancel For Any Reason for travelers who have specific concerns that can’t be covered by standard Trip Cancellation.

Is Cancel For Any Reason Worth It?

Cancel For Any Reason can add further flexibility and peace of mind heading into a trip. To judge whether or not CFAR is worth the higher premium, it’s important to understand what is covered by standard Trip Cancellation coverage.

How much reimbursement will I receive with Cancel For Any Reason Coverage?

Unlike Trip Cancellation coverage which provides 100% of the prepaid and non-refundable trip costs, Cancel For Any Reason reimburses between 50-75%, depending on the policy.

However, travelers who purchase the Cancel For Any Reason are still covered by standard Trip Cancellation. This means if they are forced to cancel for a covered reason on a standard Trip Cancellation policy, such as unforeseen illness or injury, they can still be reimbursed for 100% of their non-refundable trip costs. If they need to cancel for a reason that is not covered, they may be reimbursed by the Cancel For Any Reason benefit.

Please be aware that coverage and eligibility requirements for this benefit differ by policy.
